"MAYBE I'LL JUST RUN LATER"... TIPS TO STAYING
MOTIVATED
Briana Whaley, Elite Distance
Runner
It can be difficult
to stay motivated during your training. Motivation
can be hard to maintain for all athletes from the
elite runner to the recreational jogger. Without
motivation, a known purpose for your training,
it can become downright miserable making yourself
lace up your shoes to go for a run. When you reach
that point it suddenly becomes very easy to start
skipping runs or stopping your training all together.
Now that the weather is getting warmer it maybe
even harder to remain inspired. Here are some tips
that I have found helpful in keeping up my drive
to run:
Know why you run each day: Ask yourself why
you run. Use the answer to keep your feet moving
each day. Without a purpose for the pain and
hard work it is all too easy to stop. Whether
your reason is to lose weight or qualify for
the 2012 Olympic team your goals will motivate
you to pull out your running shoes.
Keep a training log: It always seems that
facts seem more “real” when we see
them in writing. Keep a training log to track
your progress and you may find that seeing your
achievements in writing helps you to realize
all that you have done. It is easy to forget
how great of a day you had when you did the 5
miler by the lake but when you write it down
you can go back and remember. It allows you to
review what you did the on days that you felt
wonderful and what not to do again based on the
days you ran poorly. It may get to the point
that you do not want to leave a page blank… that’s
motivation!
Find a running partner: It is always easier
to stick to any type of plan or program when
you are accountable to others. When you know
that you have to meet someone to run you are
less likely to change your plan. Running with
other people also makes running a social event
which can be fun!
Run somewhere new: Use running as a way to
explore new territory and use it as a sight-seeing
tool. Set a goal to run to a certain spot that
you have never been to and it will give you something
to look forward to- making it more exciting.
By venturing to a new place it helps to take
the focus off of the run itself allowing you
to focus on where you are going and what you
are seeing.
Celebrate your accomplishments: Celebrate
all your accomplishments: big and small! Take
time to enjoy your new PR or your new record
for distance covered or your weight loss. Even
when you have a bad day focus on the positives-
like the fact that you pushed through it and
finished. Honoring those achievements will keep
you inspired.
Take a day off: It can be mentally taxing
to train every day. Taking a day off a week or
every other week can give you a chance to enjoy
the benefits of your hard work and prepare for
the work to come. Rest is actually a useful training
tool since it allows your body to repairs and
rebuilds itself making your muscles stronger.
Race: Racing is a good way to test your fitness
that you have been working so hard to gain. It
is not only a way to judge your progress it is
a great way to break up the monotony of daily
runs. Racing is a way to enjoy what you love
to do in a social setting. A lot of races have
really fun post-race activities, too… that
makes getting up early to run a little more worth
it!
